Cymdeithas Pysgota
CEFNI
Angling Association
Background
.Between 1947 and 1949 a dam was built on the Cefni River near Llangefni on Anglesey and this resulted in the loss of river fishing for local anglers after the formation of the Cefni Reservoir, area 174 acres.
The late Mr. Jeffrey (Tim) Davies a local angler contacted Anglesey County Council as the local water authority for permission to fish on the reservoir in May 1951.
He was advised to arrange a meeting of local anglers with a view to form a Club or Angling Association and then approach the County Council for a lease to fish to Cefni Reservoir.
In October 1951 eleven local anglers met and the Cefni Angling Association was formed with Tim Davies being the first Secretary. In January 1952 representatives of the Association met Council Officers and a lease was agreed and fishing started from 1st March 1952. Rules- Fly only, no fish less than 12 inches to be kept and a limit of two trout to be kept per visit. Subscription for the first season was 2 pounds two shillings, (two pounds ten pence).
Since the above date Cymdeithas Pysgota CEFNI Angling Association have managed the fishing on the Cefni Reservoir and a new long-term lease has recently been negotiated.
Location
The Cefni Reservoir is situated outside Llangefni, Anglesey. Take the B5109 from Llangefni towards Bodffordd and after some 2 miles turn right, signposted Hyder Cefni Treatment Works, follow this road past the Treatment works to the car park.
Update
A lot has changed since 1952, fishing is still fly only, for Brown and Rainbow Trout. Access for bank fishing has improved since the forestry cropped the conifer trees around the lake. Rowing boats of 10 to 12 feet are available for hire. There is a clubhouse where refreshments can be made but no toilets-these are planned in proposed developments over next few years. 4,000 trout are stocked each season, 1,000 brown and 3,000 rainbows, and size 11 inches to 15 inches. Average weight of fish is 1 lb. 4 oz with fishery record Brown 7 lb. and Rainbow at 6 lb.

Tactics
Best tactics early season are sinking lines with black and white lures and Vivas (Viva is successful most of the season). As the water warms up intermediate and floating lines will take over with traditional wet flies, various nymphs such as GRHE, PTN, Black Nymph and Beetles doing well sub-surface while dry flies such as Sedges, emerging Buzzers and Olives are best on top. Best hatches when weather permits are the sedges during late summer evenings
Season to date.
Prior to the Start of the new season 1000 brown trout 11-13 inches and 1,000 rainbow trout 12-14 inches were stocked, a further 500 rainbow trout of 13-15 inches were stocked during the week 26.4.1999, a further 1500 rainbows will be stocked during the season.
The season has started well with good bags of fish being caught surprisingly with intermediate and slow sink lines rather than the sinking lines usually seen at the start of the season.
Best fish to date- brown 2 lb. rainbow 2 lb. 12 oz.
A Junior Competition/coaching session was held on the 23 May with 19 juniors taking part. 12 fish were caught in the competition with the winner
Tomos Edwards catching 8 fish total weight 7 lb. 12 oz.
The junior section has been very popular with two induction dates for new members already held and a regular monthly meeting arranged.
On the 1st May our Annual Competition was held with 38 anglers including 12 juniors competing. 38 trout were caught. Winners were Adults heaviest bag B. Grail with 5 fish 5 lb. 1 oz
Adults heaviest fish Elfed Jones with a brown of 2 lb.
Juniors heaviest bag Gethin Jones with 2 fish 1 lb. 10 oz
